St John’s
Upperthong
Located on Upperthong Lane between Holmfirth and Upperthong, we are a welcoming church that seeks to share a living faith with the local community. We offer a traditional Holy Communion Service at 11.00am on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The church is also open every day of the week for quiet contemplation and prayer.
Set in a beautiful, tranquil setting, nestled in the hills, many people come to sit and take in the stunning views before going into the church. They say that they find peace here. We are a popular church for weddings, baptisms and funerals.
We welcome many visitors who come from all over the world, in particular to see the graves of Compo and Cleggy - stars of BBC series ‘The Last of the Summer Wine’ that ran from 1973 - 2010. We also have six Commonwealth War graves that are carefully looked after by volunteers.
The church was built from subscriptions in 1848 in the high gothic style and has been much loved and ‘improved’ over the years to include a new Lady Chapel and a meeting room. Everyone is most welcome and we are sure that you can find God’s Love in our friendly and caring church.
